Jason and Dan Olive 2007

Message from Family

It was painful and frustrating watching Jason battle his illness over the years and not being able to truly help ease his pain. Through the wealth of knowledge found on this website my mother and I were able to gain some closure over what really happened to Jason.

The signs we mistook as an addiction to alcohol and cocaine were in fact an addiction to alcohol and crystal meth. The damage this drug has caused to our family is immeasurable and we only hope that others can learn of the signs early and hopefully be able to help their loved ones before it is too late. 'We miss you Jay and we will always love you!'

In Loving Memory

Jason Ryan Olive was a gifted individual that touched the lives of all that knew him. His compassion & love was very unique and genuine.

All was going well in his life until the age of 16 when he found out that his father Larry had terminal cancer. While his father's condition continued to dereriorate so did Jason's quality of friends and his social life. He started hanging out with a different crowd and began using drugs and alcohol to mask the pain of his father's disease.

After his father passed away Jason's addictions worsened and he became increasingly paranoid and angry. His paranoia became so strong that he refused help from anyone as he thought they wanted to hurt him.

By age 19 he had developed full blown schizophrenia and started seeing constant hallucinations and heard voices in his head. Eventually he started to show suicidal signs as he lost more and more control of the schizophrenia.

At his breaking point his family was able to get him admitted to Eric Martin Pavillion where he stayed for 3 heartbreaking months. During this time doctors continually tried to dope him up with various medications with little success. Eventually the doctors resorted to shock therapy treatment which resulted in his release and brought about a Jason that had been gone for over a year. For the first time he had begun to see some hope that he might be able to recover.

Gradually Jason's schizophrenia came back and over the next year and a half his roller coaster of a battle brought him further and further down. On August 7th, 2007 Jason committed suicide to end the voices and hallucinations that plagued him. He was 13 days away from his 22nd birthday.

Jason is survived by his older brother Daniel and his mother Suzanne. After his passing they learned that Jason's apparent cocaine addiction was in fact an addiction to crystal meth. The drug dealer Jason had been using was lacing his cocaine with crystal meth to keep him addicted.

In wanting to learn more about this drug they came across the Crystal Meth Society of BC's website and were impressed by it's content. The signs that they had thought were induced by Jason's cocaine use were quite obviously signs of a crystal meth addiction. In an attempt to try and create something positive from Jason's memory Daniel approached the society with an idea to raise money to help them continue to spread their message.

The idea was a raffle! Through sponsorship, friends and family Daniel was able to raise $10,000 by selling all 2,000 tickets in just 3 weeks. Daniel would like to thank his sponsors Seafirst Insurance Brokers Ltd., Peace Hills General Insurance Company & Pacific Concrete Cutters Ltd. for the generous donations.
