My mom and dad split up when i was quite young and my brother and i live with my mom. The break up made my dad so depressed that it hurt him every minute he was away from my brother and i.

My dad later started using drugs. He soon reached the point where it was an unbearable high to stop and was a daily routeen to survive getting to the end of the day. He became a junkie. Stealing frequently, having possesion of guns, and spending thousands of dollars on drugs helped ease his pain from the loneliness and not seeing my brother and i.

One day i got a phone call, it was a scratchy long distances sounding call and in the background their were several other voices. My dad said this "i have to be quick, i don't have much time on the phone, i'm in jail". I dropped the phone and my eyes began to fill with tears. Each month after that i recieved a letter, those letters spoke of the horrid hell that jail was and what my dad had done to get there.

My dad was under the influence of cocain and possibly meth and stole a car. He killed and innocent man, with a life of his own and people that loved him dearly. Luckily my dad wasn't killed too ( im sure the mans family would not say that) but my dad and i thank god for that. I do not have the slightest idea what it would be like to lose a father or a grandpa or any family member for that matter so i would never understand the depths of the pain of the mans family. That changed my life forever, i would never look at my dad the same agian; even though i still love him. I was filled with embarassment, anger, and emotion.

My dad spent 3 yrs in jail and lost practically everything meaningful in his life. He was about 5 yrs late on his monthly child support bills reaching costly amounts of around 36,000 dollars. also, he lost all the 10's of 1000's of dollars he spent on drugs plus the money he owed to court. He lost his lisence and had to serve a year or 2 in rehab and the hardest thing on him now is not over coming cravings but his mother dying of cancer. My dad has been clean for nearly 3 yrs and never regrets it. Now, my dad uses his experience to help people. He visits the jail and the rehab program and teaches and shares his stories to troubled teens in hopes of helping them fufill a brighter future. There are also many things i learned from this whole thing but the main thing is to never take for granted the blessings gods given us, and try to find something possitive from every negitive.
