3.7 TONNES of ecstasy ingredient seized at Vancouver port.

A record 3.7 tonnes of an illegal chemical used in making ecstasy has been seized in Vancouver by the Canada Border Services Agency and the RCMP.

The amount was enough to make 30 million doses of ecstasy, RCMP said in a statement released Thursday.

The investigation began in early April when the CBSA's Marine Targeting Unit identified a high-risk shipment scheduled to arrive at the Port of Vancouver from China.

When border services officers examined 78 barrels labelled sodium hydroxide inside a marine container, they found the chemical MDP2P, the main ingredient used in the production of ecstasy.

RCMP said the investigation is continuing, but believe the chemical shipment is related to organized crime.
