as an ex resident of the Island, but still a steady visitor,as I still have
lots of relatives......I have alot of contact via "the internet".
I also listen to the various radio stations from out there.
I hear alot of comercials about drunk drivers and such, but nothing
about crystal meth. Whats up with that? If anyone has an answer please
fill me in. I think if the comercials were gross enough, it might at least
make some kids think before they tried it.
P.S.

By The Way. Hey- it's great to have a little interaction on this site!
Funny how you are out East, and more active that residents here!

I am hopeing to get more involved somehow...I think there have been media spots and then it gets swallowed up by other stories...Locally, of course, it is obvious to any one out and about...Here and in other BC hotspots.

lol I'm not to savy with short forms. It's not too bad here yet, but I've
certainly heard of it.I have an 8 year old boy so it scares the bajeebers
out of me! that's how I found this site. I find this site to be one of the
best. I was listening to "the Q" the other day, and they had a drinking
and driving spot about this kid in a wheelchair who missed his best
friend. It turned out his best friend was dead because he was hit by a drunk driver, and he was in the wheelchair because he was the drunk
driver. I never hear ones about meth. You know what I mean?

ok- i see what you mean. MADD, or someone paid for the spot? I will have to listen for it...
Yes, if my son was 8, I would be very worried.
I agree; this site is well designed- very accessable...if only more ppl were useing it! Laughing

I would guess the school districts and task forces have been working on some kind of presentation for some levels...I think it is important that they target kids in elementary schools too. Give them as much information as they can digest and comprehend without going over their heads. It is pretty sad when you have to teach your children about the evils of the world they may encounter when they are so young. But, necessary Sad

ya, well that is the information hiwy for you...sometimes it is just a ditch of debris or worse, the worst imaginable source for evil...
CM is volatile, creates about 5 times the amount of product in hazardous material left somewhere in the enviroment, and is pure poison...very dangerous stuff. .....but if you want to know how to make it, or bombs or down load kiddie porn the i-net is your friend. Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

BUT the information on what it is and does is also available to on line, so maybe we should attach to the sites promoteing the production and give the flip side....it is a cheap drug to buy- must be dirt cheap to make...
scummy producers.... Evil or Very Mad

Interesting discussion and it's nice to finally see some action in the forums!

FYI -The Q radio station has been playing crystal meth public service announcements from ex users and parents for several months. They are powerful messages that alot of people have mentioned they've heard.

The District 61 Community Task Force has also developed a Meth Tip line advertised in the media and on Ch TV.

Along with the school district, our volunteers have developed a presentation about crystal meth that will be shown to every lower Island middle and high school before June 2006. It is also going out to each PAC on request. We have many volunteer presenters and as well do classroom presentations. At present we are focusing on Arbutus and Reynolds Schools.

We also have a group of students from Camosun and UVIC doing presentations on campus, in private schools and in the community. They will be setting up kiosks at the Malls in the near future.

As well we have a community speaker's bureau that will provide information to any community group or business on request.

There is also a team going out and informing retailers of what to watch for in terms of selling the precursors used to make meth. (MethWatch)

Our latest effort is in assisting in getting a treatment home for youth open in April which will provide detox on demand and transition beds after detox. Currently the Island is under-served in detox and long term recovery beds for stimulant users.

Personally I help facilitate a Crystal Meth Support Group for parents and family members to provide information about the drug and what to expect during use and recovery.

All this takes an incredible amount of organization, passion and determination, but any community has the ability to do the same thing. Hold a public meeting and they will come!

Hello Patty,

I'm interested in your question about PSAs (public service announcement) on the radio and other public awareness steps the Crystal Meth Victoria Society and local community task forces are taking. Marilyn mentioned a couple of things we've done. The radio PSAs -- there are 11 different ones -- are currently airing on The Q and Jack radio stations in Victoria. They have been airing since November 2005 and air frequently each day. The listening audience for these stations is young, so we're reaching a targeted group.

Our local CH TV station also airs regularly a PSA about the Meth Watch Program, a program through which retailers monitor and limit the sales of the products used to manufacture crystal meth. Meth Watch was formally launched in Victoria on February 3, 2006, at the RONA Hardware Store. About eight other major retailers in the area are gearing up to participate in the program. The City of Surrey is using our model for this program because it has been so well researched.

Other local radio and televisions stations have been very supportive and helpful in getting information out about the dangers of crystal meth. All of them (three television stations and about half a dozen radio stations) have aired promotions about our public meetings, free of charge, and have helped us in many ways to get the message out. Many have our website linked to theirs and the meth tip line number is posted on some as well.

Electronic media is certainly a key way to reach many people. Print media is equally as important. All of our local print media have published ads for us free of charge, and have covered on a regular basis the issues and actions we're taking to fight the drug. We published on January 29 a two-page spread in the Victoria Times-Colonist. It's available in this website's media room if you didn't have an opportunity to see it in the paper. All of our news releases and backgrounders are also available there. Watch for more later this week (February 26, 2006).

The B.C. Government will be launching its public awareness campaign shortly. It will be provincewide and will include electronic and print media. Thanks to their campaign, the society and task forces can now focus its public awareness efforts on other projects. Stay tuned!

Thanks,
Nancy Pearson
