Linda writes
"My daughter is 21. We brought her home from the Island one year ago. She had been doing crystal meth for a few months by then. She had lost weight and didn't look well at all.

She wanted to come home to the interior and try to get off the drugs. All she did for the first few days was eat and sleep. She did well for the first 4 months. She found a job, got a small apt with a close friend and seemed to be on the right track.

She was however, smoking a lot of pot and doing quite a bit of drinking. She always seemed to need a lot of action in her life. Then she met up with a user at work and everthing went downhill from there. She lost touch with all her friends that didn't do drugs. Her life seemed to be out of control. She slept over at friends houses, she didn't wash, do laundry, eat, sleep, her hair looked awful, she lived in a pig pen, she was just a huge mess.

Then a few months later she tried again to quit. We helped her move into a more cheerful apt. with no roomate this time. Things went better at her job, she was encouraged, she was such a pleasure to be around and we all made sure to tell and praise her often. But one snort with old friends was all it took to put her back to square one. She only made it 3 months that time. We had just taken her out to dinner to celebrate 3 months being clean.

She says that she was looking for any stupid excuse for calling her buddies up for a snort. She changes drastically when she is on meth. She gets *****y, and no one wants to be around her. She is just down right not nice to be around. Right now she is trying once again to clean up her act. She slipped up once in six days.

She is aware of counselors and has been to see one a few times and has attended a few NA meetings, but says they do not help much. Right now she is sick with strepp throat. She is constantly wiping at her nose. I hope there is an end to her struggles one day.

My heart goes out to the both of you and all your friends and family. Have you asked her why is it that she finds the need to indulge in this dangerous past time? Does she need better coping skils, stress reducers like meditation or yoga? Perhaps assertiveness training might also help. Do you belong to a church? She needs new and better friends, Young people who have goals and dreams and who can be a good example to her. I will pray for you and your loved one.
